How to Get Rid of Unwanted Property in Utah

Feb 18, By Chris Stacey

In most cases in Utah, getting a piece of property off of your hands is as simple as putting it up for sale individually, or even contacting a broker to help streamline the process.

But for whatever reason, some properties across the state may seem impossible to get off your hands, leaving you with unwanted upkeep costs and property taxes draining precious dollars from your pockets.

All is not lost though; there are a few things you can try to sell off unwanted property, wherever it may be. Consider the following options when making your decision:

Donate the Property to Charity

Of course, if you are looking to make a small profit off of your unwanted property, then you might want to look towards a different avenue. But if you are simply hoping to drop this home or piece of land from your list of possessions, you can always attempt to donate it to a local charity for their benefit. They may be reluctant to accept it if the property is unusable, or in a seedy location, but if it has any value you may find it to be a simple and altruistic option.

Offer Your Broker a Massive Commission

Again, this option may be best for those only looking to get rid of this property as soon as possible. If you do decide to use the services of a broker, though, offering them an extremely high commission will fuel their desires to sell off the property as quickly as possible in order to secure extra cash. This way, you will still see a portion of the money, and you will leave the process in the hands of an extremely qualified and capable individual.

Sell for Nearly Nothing

For some reason, when attempting to simply give away land or other types of property for no cost at all, many individuals or organizations will be more reluctant to accept, as the idea of something for free brings up questions of legitimacy. If you find yourself unable to unload your unwanted property onto the hands of someone else then, consider changing up your approach by offering the item for an extremely discounted cost, instead of nothing at all. Because there will be a monetary cost associated with the property in question, you may find more people willing to make offers on it this way.

Be Wary of Letting it Go

Above are a few creative and simple ideas you can use to get rid of your unwanted property. Conversely though, there are also options that may leave you in more trouble than before.

For one, it is never a good idea to stop paying the property taxes altogether in hopes of a quick foreclosure. Whether or not the state forecloses on the area, this may lead to your credit taking a giant hit.

Additionally, some people choose to leave such properties in their wills or estate plans to future heirs. This does eventually help you get rid of it, but it creates a whole new set of problems for generations down the line.

Be Creative and Get Rid of Your Property

Ultimately, there are a variety of ways you can try to get rid of your unwanted property in Utah. And with a bit of creativity, and even some help, the whole process may be quick, painless, and a lot easier than you thought!
